SO I just finished my 2nd day at my new job.
The first day was called "orientation", and consisted of sitting mostly in a room with 50 other people, watching corporate videos and propaganda. It was fine though, and quite easy. I met a few good people, and ate some nice pastries.
The second day (today) was more "orientation", this time focussed on the group I am actually working for. This only lasted half the day. When I finally left the conference room around lunchtime, I was surprised by my friend Bob, who kidnapped me from the HR people, and took me out to lunch. All very irregular, and greatly appreciated.
Lunch was excellent. No, wait, lunch was more than that. It was probably some of the best food I have every eaten. The place was a small, mom and pop Greek place. Good, cheap, made-from-scratch food. I had a falafel pita sandwich, and like I said, it was truly a life altering experience.
The afternoon was spent talking to lots of people, getting a feel for what my work will entail. The scope is quite breath-taking. I am excited. I am in charge. Muhahahaha!
The company I work for is a big corporation. They employ 140,000 people worldwide. The division I work for employs around 3000 of those. The building I work in holds around 400 of those. ALthough these numbers are large, and would suggest a degree of Borg-ness, it seems far from that. Everyone I met today was so full of energy and excited about what they were doing or a part of. It's a really fresh and creative environment, and far removed from the place I just left.
So far, so good! |
